Bleckley Church League Softball Champion crowned Saturday

Softball was the name of the game around much of Bleckley County Saturday as the annual church league softball post-season tournament took place.

Fifteen teams from 11 churches in Bleckley (and Twiggs) counties played at three fields (Ruth Baptist Church, House Of Grace Church, and Limestone Baptist Church.)  The top team from each five-team tournament advanced to Ruth for the championship round.  It took two games for Ruth Baptist to advance.  Bethany Baptist (who lost to Ruth in the tourney opener for both teams) fought their way out of the loser's bracket to the field finale.  Along the way, they eliminated last year's champion, Mount Zion Baptist Church of Danville.

At Limestone Baptist, First Baptist Church team one capped an undefeated day with a win over FBC team two to adance to the title round.  FBC 2 had won consecutive loser's bracket games against host Limestone and St. Paul's en route to the field first-place contest.  At House Of Grace, New Life Church Of God defeated House Of Grace team one twice (the second win coming at Ruth due to a scheduling conflict with umpires at HOG) to make it into the finals.  Ruth and New Life squared off, the winner playing FBC 1 for the championship.

New Life advanced 7-6.  In the title game, FBC 1 took a 2-0 lead after one inning en route to an 8-1 triumph.

Cody Jones had a solo home run in the win.

The tournament victory is the second in three years for First Baptist Church.
