Coroner: Bibb Firefighter Committed Suicide at Wife's Workplace
News

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says a 42-year-old Macon-Bibb firefighter shot and killed himself in the parking lot of the business where his wife works.

Jack Scarborough was pronounced dead at the Medical Center of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Jones said.

This January, Scarborough began serving on the City Council in Danville, a small community that straddles the Twiggs-Wilkinson County line.

Fellow councilman William Deason, Jr., says he had known Scarborough since they met through school friends when he was 10 or 11 years old.

"I've been thinking about this all day, ever since it happened," Deason says. "I didn't see this coming. This blindsided me."

He said Scarborough was a man with good standards who "stood on his own two feet" and enjoyed serving the community of Danville. Though already a Macon-Bibb Fireman, he was also a volunteer firefighter for Danville and could be counted on to lend a hand with things like a community clean up day.

This town of fewer than 400 people has been shaken by this sudden loss.

"It's a small community," Deason says. "Everybody really knows everybody so this has had a real hard impact."

The suicide happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Macon Behavioral Medicine at 3500 Riverside Drive, Jones said. He was uncertain whether Scarborough's wife witnessed it.

Macon police spokeswoman Jami Gaudet said she had no information to provide on the death.
