Christmas tree farm opens for the season
News

It's part of the post-thanksgiving tradition: gearing up to buy your Christmas tree.

If you're looking to get one the old fashioned way, then check out Sandy Creek Christmas Tree Farm in Twiggs County.

Claire Davis spent the afternoon there to learn more about what the farm has to offer and what families are doing to get ready for the holidays.

The Prine family is searching for the perfect Christmas Tree.

"One for the living room, one for my sons, the boys' bedroom and then one for the office," said Jay Prine.

All nine members of the family get together each year and head to Sandy Creek Christmas Tree Farm in Twiggs county. Brothers, sisters, grandparents, moms, dads, and even the furriest member of the family, Peanut.

The fun doesn't end with throwing the tree in the truck. The Prines have a full day ahead of them.

"Get them home and go into the attic and get down all the lights and decorate the yard and decor the trees. Then probably vacuum all of the pine needles that come off of it," said Prine.

So what makes this place so special?

"Just better coming out here and cutting down your own tree rather than going to a store and buying it in a box.," he said. "(It's) more fun to have with the family. (We) kind of make it an event, spend a nice Sunday or Saturday coming out here and doing that."

Since 1977, Donald Watson and his wife have sold the perfect pines to families from all over Central Georgia.

"This is the only business I've ever been around where everybody's happy," Watson said.

The Watsons grow their own trees. Virginia Pines, Green Giants, Carolina Sapphire's and more. They import the Frasier Firs from the North Carolina Mountains. Watson says that's where they grow best.

"All total almost 300 acres but Christmas trees. We've got about 30 acres scattered around," he said.

Watson said the crops were also favorable this year.

"They were wonderful. The rain was very timely," he said. "Maybe we should start trying to grow Frasier Fir if the rain's going to be that good."

Sandy Creek Christmas Tree Farm is open everyday from 10 a.m. until dark until December 20. Watson said the trees range in price from $10 to $120.
