Construction will affect Twiggs Schools 2015-16 calendar

Twiggs County Comprehensive Middle-High School needs a new heating and cooling system, but to do that, the district needs to adjust its 2015-2016 school schedule.

In 2014, the board voted to build a new $1.6 million system. "It's very important that our students have the opportunity to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer," said Elgin Dixon, superintendent.

Dixon said construction should start in May and will last three and half months. He said students can't be at school when the work is being done, so the calendar might look different than in years past if the school board approves next Thursday.

"Our first day of school for the 2015/16 school year will be August 31st, is the proposed date," he added.

Dixon said school usually starts around August 1st. This year students have 176 days in school. But with the proposed change, next year, it could be 173. To make up for that, all grades will be in school an extra 30 minutes to the end of the day.

"Where we would normally have gotten out at 3:15, we will get out at 3:45, and that's to accommodate for our high school schedule, because there's required number of hours," he said.

Also students won't get fall break. "But we will have a full week at Thanksgiving and we will have two weeks at Christmas, and we will have a three-day winter break," said Dixon.

Spring break wouldn't be affected and school would be out before the end of May.

The calendar goes to vote at Twiggs board meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. It's at 952 Main Street Jeffersonville.
