Task force to make DFCS head report to governor

(WXIA) -- Gov. Nathan Deal's office is preparing an announcement on changes to organizational structure at the Division of Family and Children Services, sources tell 11Alive's Rebecca Lindstrom.

According to the sources, DFCS will be separate from DHS and the head of DFCS will report directly to the governor instead of the commissioner.

Sport Fencing growing at high school and middle school levels

Many parents and educators across the U.S. are coming to realize the benefits to students of Olympic Sport Fencing.  Sport fencing has been a small but ever present sport in America since the 19th century.  Usually, and erroneously, associated with the privileged class, it has found little place at large in the ball dominate sports arena in America.  However, that view has been changing rapidly over the 25 years.  The U.S. has grown steadily in world prominence including generation of World Champions and Olympic Gold and Silver medalist.  This growth is attributed with broader media coverage but also with a concerted effort by coaches and fencing enthusiast to promote this exciting sport at the middle school and high school levels around the country.  This moves fencing out from the traditional private salles (clubs) and college environments so as to make it accessible to everyone who is interested.

Journey for Autism ride to benefit Central Georgia Autism

(CGA) and local cycle team, BigRing Racing are pleased to partner for the 2nd Annual A Journey for Autism ride on April 5,2014 at 8 a.m – Macon-Bibb County Autism Awareness Day. Proceeds from the 100-mile century ride will provide scholarships for children on the autism spectrum and continued funding for CGA to raise awareness and provide resources for families.  For more information and to register, visit: journeyforautism.com. Ava Bullard, the namesake for Ava’s Law (the autism insurance bill), will lead the ride.

Winter storm watch for Central Georgia

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for all of central Georgia beginning Tuesday morning until Wednesday afternoon.

A wintry mix is expected for central and southern parts of the state beginning Tuesday afternoon. Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow are likely Tuesday evening until Wednesday morning.
