Twiggs County Valedictorian, Salutatorian Announced

Twiggs County Valedictorian, Salutatorian Announced

Twiggs County Schools announced their valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2013.

Schamona Williams was named Valedictorian and Maiya Stephens was named Salutatorian, according to the school system's website.

Williams plans to attend Savannah State University.

Stephens plans to attend Valdosta State University.

Pack 962 Plants Trees for Community Service Project in Twiggs

Cub Scout and Webolo Pack 962 of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Danville celebrated Earth Day by planting two  Yoshino Cherry trees on the lawn of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. 

The two trees were donated by Advanced Disposal’s Wolf Creek Landfill in Twiggs County. The planting of the trees were also used as a community service project to help the cub scout pack earn their Citizen Belt Loop Award and for the Webolos to earn their Citizenship Activity Badge. 

The boys also had to:

Develop a list of jobs to do around the home and chart their progress for one week, draw a poster on ways to be a better citizen.

Young Astronauts Day at the Museum of Aviation

Young Astronauts Day at the Museum of Aviation

A live hookup with the Kennedy Space Center in Florida will highlight the Annual Young Astronauts’ Day at the Museum of Aviation on Saturday, May 11.  The students will be welcomed by Colonel Mitch Butikofer from Robins Air Force Base.  The opening ceremony will feature Rachel B. Power, a NASA education specialist from Kennedy Space Center talking live to more than 200 first through eight-grade students on large digital learning network screens in the Century of Flight Hangar. 

Each student will then attend three different workshops around the Museum taught by Museum staff members and volunteer class leaders from Middle Georgia, Robins AFB and the Houston County School system. 

Young Astronauts Day sponsors are the Air Force Association, Belks, a NASA grant, Fort Valley State University Cooperative Development Energy Program, the NASA Regional Educator Resource Center and the Museum of Aviation Foundation.

Girl Scout Alumnae Reunion in Central Georgia

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia will hold a reunion on May 4 from 1-6 pm at Camp Martha Johnson in Lizella.  Alumnae will enjoy revisiting camp, renewing friendships, and helping to create a digital archive, according to a news release. 

The event is free. Donations for camp upkeep will be accepted.
