Third-grade teacher Andrea Lewis thought Wednesday was going to be like any other day of teaching.

But she was in for a surprise and some tears.

"I'm so surprised!" Lewis said.

Her student, Jameerah Cooper, wrote a letter to 13WMAZ nominating her for the My Teacher is Tops Award.

"Even if she doesn't win, in my heart, she will always be the top teacher," the letter read.

Ms. Lewis says she didn't expect one of her students to nominate her for our top teacher award.

Before she got hired, Ms. Lewis says she told the school she was going to be teaching in a different way."I'm very shocked," Lewis said. "My kids always tell me they like my teaching and that they appreciate me. It's nice to see how much they appreciate me. I'm very happy."

She helps the students learn with songs and dances.

"They use them on the test all the time," Lewis said. "You see them bouncing, but they're not dancing. They're actually doing their work with a song."

Junior Journalist Kinley Pridgen talked to a couple of Ms. Lewis's students to see why they think their teacher is tops.

Michael Hough told us Lewis "has a great terminology."

"She is so smart, so she is making me so smart," Hough said.

Some of these students said they want Ms. Lewis to be their teacher forever.

"I don't want to go to fourth grade but I have to pass," Samantha Yandell said.

These third graders will have to leave Ms. Lewis's class eventually, but they say she's always going to be in their hearts.
