Twiggs County Family Receives Donation from Lumber Liquidators | Community Spirit
In 2006, Jamie and Amanda McDaniel brought their second child into the world, a son named Marshall. Marshall was born with the lung/digestive disease Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
Since birth, Marshall has been hospitalized twice for extended periods of time, once at the Medical Center of Georgia and another at the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, both times with serious respiratory infections. Marshall has also underwent two surgeries to install and replace tubes, surgery to remove his adenoids, and three sinus surgeries to clean and remove sinus polyps.
With the help of the Reaching Out Foundation, Lumber Liquidators donated 1,400 square ft. of hardwood flooring to replace the carpet that was inside the McDaniel home. This is all in an effort to make Marshall’s surroundings a healthier environment. Unlike carpet, hardwood floors can be disinfected of harmful germs and bacteria. Also, hardwood floors do not store dust, dirt, mites, and other nasties that go undetected.
The McDaniel’s would like to thank Lumber Liquidators and The Reaching Out Foundation for making this happen. Raising a child with a life threatening disease brings on a host of life style changes and financial burdens and without their help we would not have been able to afford to purchase the flooring.
The McDaniel’s picked up the flooring from the Lumber Liquidators Byron store, located at 150 Tower Centre Drive Byron Georgia, two weeks ago and was greeted by the store manager and staff. The staff were very friendly and tolerated all of Marshall’s silly questions about his new floor. They answered all our questions and loaded and helped secure the flooring. Lumber liquidators is surely a top notch organization and we are forever grateful.
The Reaching Out Foundation: In 1992 Susan Burroughs, an adult patient of Cystic Fibrosis (CF), recognized a need among CF patients to connect with other patients and families for information and support. With that in mind, she developed a newsletter called Reaching Out. For years Susan campaigned and raised money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's research efforts to find the cure for CF. After watching many of her friends die because of the poor quality of life during their illness, she realized there is much work to be done while waiting for a cure. This was the impetus for the Cystic Fibrosis-Reaching Out Foundation, Inc., an all-volunteer 501(c) 3 benevolent organization to help CF patients and families. Cystic Fibrosis-Reaching Out Foundation, Inc. is sensitive to the needs of patients and families with Cystic Fibrosis and provides financial assistance, emergency assistance, insurance assistance, nutritional assistance, and educational resources to assist them.
